The CENIT (National Strategic Consortia for Technical Research) program is a Spanish initiative to promote the public-private collaboration in industrial research of high-potential technological sectors, such as biometrics. INTEGRA was one of the projects of this program, aimed at improving technological control of population flows in the European Union (with special emphasis on EU outer borders control). Within this framework, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid was appointed to work on the development of a non-cooperative iris recognition system at a distance and on the move, partnered with Universidad de Malaga and the company SHS-Consultores.
